BCUMC was founded to serve the community and continues in that strong tradition. Current community outreach programs include:
BCUMC provides bi-monthly food and volunteer services staff to the Soup Kitchen on the North Side. The soup kitchen food is donated and transported by congregation members. BCUMC has provided this assistance for 17 years.
Vacant Lot Cleanup
BCUMC provides services to help clean up vacant lots in our community. We will visit the site and clean up any trash, plant grass seed, flowers and clean up landscaping. We have most of the tools needed, but if you need us to plant grass seed, we prefer if you could provide a drop spreader to make the job faster.
The Lord's Pantry has provided monthly food staples to community residents in need, for over 40 years. Pre-registration and qualification is necessary as supplies are donated, in part, by the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. The remainder of the donations are from BCUMC members.
Elementary School Tutoring
BCUMC supplies volunteers, coordinated through South Hills Interfaith Ministries (SHIM), to tutor elementary school children on a weekly basis. Tutoring is provided at Whitehall Elementary School or at the community center of a local apartment complex.
United Methodist Women and Methodist Men
The UMW and MM organize and raise money for a variety of missions through annual events such as the Chicken & Ribs Barbecue (13 years), Flapjack Festival (48 years), card party and bazaar.
Christmas Annual Outreach
BCUMC participates annually in the collection of a variety of items needed by residents in the region. The items are collected for distribution to Toys for Tots, Mayview, Methodist Ward Home for Children, and Methodist Union of Social Agencies (MUSA).
