Human Rights Celebration 2010
Living the Challenge:
Differently Enabled, Uniquely Called
Saturday, July 31, 2010
Worship Service in the Chapel
Light Lunch to follow in Wesley Hall
Registration 9:30 a.m.
“Living the Challenge: Differently Enabled, Uniquely Called” invites you to consider how the world today may be inaccessible to people with physical, mental or emotional disabilities. … People may look or act different than you, but they are still made in the image of God. There is unity amidst diversity. This celebration (through worship and small group discussion) will encourage you to be part of creating more accessibility for people with disabilities and treating them with the dignity they deserve.
A Human Rights Award will be given at this event. The qualifications for these awards and forms for nominating someone will be posted on the UMW bulletin board. The Church Women United will award a person in the Pittsburgh area who meets the qualifications and thus, (1) recognize the contribution of the person receiving the award and (2) to encourage others to continue their personal commitment to Human Rights and especially to the cause of health and economic justice.
The UMW is hosting this program of the Church Women United (sponsor of World Day of Prayer). Everyone who can is encouraged to attend and participate in this celebration of Human Rights!
The Story of the Cracked Pot
“Know that in our weakness your strength is made perfect.” (2 Corinthians 12:9)
A water-bearer carries two large pots on a yoke across his shoulders up the hill from the river to his master's house each day. One has a crack and leaks half its water out each day before arriving at the house. The other pot is perfect and always delivered a full portion of water after the long walk from the river. Finally, after years of arriving half-empty and feeling guilty, the cracked pot apologized to the water-bearer. It was miserable. "I'm sorry that I couldn't accomplish what the perfect pot did." The water-bearer says, "What do you have to apologize for?" "After all this time, I still only deliver half my load of water. I make more work for you because of my flaw." The man smiled and told the pot. "Take note of all the lovely flowers growing on the side of the path where I carried you. The flowers grew so lovely because of the water you leaked. There are no flowers on the perfect pot's side."Each of us has our own unique flaws. We're all cracked pots. But if we will allow it, the Lord will use our flaws to grace His Father's table. In God’s great economy, nothing goes to waste. Don't be afraid of your flaws. Acknowledge them, and you, too, can be the cause of beauty. “Know that in our weakness your strength is made perfect.” (2 Corinthians 12:9)

SEPTEMBER 25 – ULTIMATE YARD SALE
PIECEMAKERS: When hurricane Katrina hit, our UMW made a commitment to make cloth school kit bags for UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) efforts. We have been sewing these bags ever since. As the earthquakes in Pakistan and Haiti and other places in the world have shown, the need for such bags and health kits, etc. is an ongoing opportunity for service. We can always use more people to help sew these bags and/or to donate sturdy fabric. Piecemakers meets the second Thursday of each month, but you may also cut or sew these bags at home. Other projects are also ongoing including multipurpose bags, prayer shawls, and baby blankets.
